blood games

This post both is and isn’t about writing.

It’s a video, and film is fundamentally different from written fiction. On the other hand, good story-telling is good story-telling, and the video below is an excellent example of effective tension. What’s more, it manages to be scary without a single drop of blood, in spite of the title.

I encourage you to find 15 minutes, sit down, and watch it. Even if you have no interest in writing horror, take copious mental notes. This is how you build tension–in what you show, and in what you don’t show.
