show me the money

On WritingBack in March, Gawker published an article entitled, “When People Write for Free, Who Pays?” Admittedly, Gawker’s mainstay isn’t hard-hitting journalism, but this article poses some solid questions about writing and the idea of making a living from it. In the article, Cord Jefferson is talking primarily about nonfiction writing, but I think a lot of the principles apply to fiction, as well.

I won’t attempt to summarize the article. Instead, I’ll just encourage you to go check it out–especially if you happen to be a writer. Give it a read, and then some thought. Afterwards, I’d love to know where you come down on this issue in the comments.
