random quotes

For this week’s writing challenge, let’s move on to something not focused on description. I enjoy referencing quotes in my writing. It’s not something I do every time I write, but there are certainly times a well placed, meaningful quote will drive home your point. An interesting quote can also be the inspiration for your writing.

Okay, so here’s the challenge: Go to the random quotes page of www.quotationspage.com and, without reading the quotes, pick one quickly. Just scroll down the page a bit and put your finger on one. No cheating. Whatever you’ve picked is your quote. Now, write 3-5 paragraphs based on this quote.

What you write is totally up to you. It could be fiction or non-fiction. It could be in support of the quote or disagreeing with it. It could include the quote or not. All the details are entirely up to you and totally open-ended. Your topic, however, must be tied to the quote in some way.

This will give you a starting place. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself in a writing mood, but unable to come up with what to write about. Problem solved. Now that you know where to begin, the challenge is to figure out what you want to say and how to say it in just a few paragraphs. The good news is that whatever you come up with, it won’t be “wrong”. You can say whatever you want. Just tie it to the quote.

And don’t be shy. If you decide to take me up on this challenge, post your paragraphs or a link to your own blog  (if you post the whole thing there) in the comments below.
