the calm before

I’m knee-deep in preparations for Nimue’s birthday. I’m even baking a cake. Myself. From scratch.
For that reason, I’ve opted for a super-short addition to my current flash fiction series. Just 100 words to tease you along. If you haven’t yet read the other parts of The Dark Calling, click here to read them, and be sure to read them in the order they were published, starting from the bottom and working your way up.
On to the fiction! This week’s prompt is brought to us by Phlambler’s World:
100 words maximum, excluding the title, of flash fiction or poetry using all of the three words above (‘history’, ‘oak’ and ‘eccentric’) in the genres of horror, fantasy or science fiction.
I promise a more substantial installment next week. In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend.
the calm before
The history of the hallowed ground of Vaalserberg went back for centuries. Dozens of nations and tribes recognized its mystical powers, this little mountain whose devotees were a more eclectic congregation than any other such spot on earth could boast. The Christians had worshiped here, as had the druids before them and the víkingr before them. Even the eccentric disciples of Baal were said to have sent an envoy to offer blood sacrifices under the oak trees.
Kenna watched one of those oaks now, its boughs swaying in the breeze.
Arawn Darksword lifted his eyes and drew breath to speak.

I went back and read them all. Wow! I remember the shudders from the one about the whispers too. Each one just makes you want to read more about this world of darkness and evil, waiting to join, and probably overtake ours. Revenge and the desire for peace and the attempt to remove the dark cloud of a father’s debt… I’ll say again–amazing. Just amazing. Can’t wait to read the next installment.
Thanks so much for that encouragement! I really see this series turning into a bigger project–probably a book. For now, though, I’m going to keep chipping away at it 1500 words or less at a time!
Again, thank you for your kind words!
I love when an Oak’s thoughts sway in the breeze.
Hope the cake rose to the occasion!
The cake was great!
